The grizzly currently enjoys legal protection in the United States. However, it is expected that its repopulation of its former range will be a slow process, due equally to the ramifications of reintroducing such a large animal to areas which are prized for agriculture and livestock and also to the bear's slow reproductive habits (bears invest a good deal of time in raising young). There are currently about 60,000 wild grizzly bears located throughout North America. Brown bears (of which the grizzly bear is a subspecies) can live up to thirty years in the wild, though twenty to twenty-five is normal

About 60,000. However it should be noted that a grizzly bear is a subspecies of brown bear that only lives in North America. Other brown bears live in Asia and Europe and so there are more than 60,000 brown bears in the world, but only about that many grizzlies. There's about 200,000 brown bears left in the world. Scroll down a bit at the third link. Brown bear is Ursus arctos, grizzly is Ursus arctos horribilis. So a grizzly is a kind of brown bear but not all brown bears are grizzlies.

Actually, grizzly bears were just taken off the endangered species list recently.
I think this has upset a lot of people.

Sifting thro' some available matter on the subject, one draws the inference that there may be about 70 to 80 thousand: quite a few of them in smoky mountains, off Knoxville, tn!
