I think its terrible that that was the case, but it is often dependant on the country and the sports incentive structure you have in place , in my country you get carded for high performance, this means that you earn about as much as someone working in mcdonalds if you are very very lucky.
Normally you would have to be ranked about 8th in europe to get that level of support. However this is probably better than other countries , however the ukrainian system of setting targets and then providing assistance based on whether you are world class or less might be a good one in that they have a blanket support structure, only it is not well funded ,however the model is worth looking at. So I guess you could say that the wages go up in direct proportion to the popularity of the sport the wealth of the country and NGB and the popularity of the talented athlete as well

Okay this all depends on what sport you play and your national federation. How good you are. This can lead to more money from endorsements. Pro basketball and Tennis players are going to be very rich.

In the USA a gold medal winner gets $40,000.

Basketball, Tennis, Ice-Hockey, many other sports have professionals who make money from playing their sports.

This all depends on how popular the sport is in your country, for example your not going to get rich playing handball in the USA, but you will make money in Germany.

Top Track-Field stars make money from endorsements and how well they do in the FIAA Golden League (if you win 6 events in 6 contests you win $1 million dollars) of course top stars get appearance fees and win more money in other contests.

Figure skaters who win gold medals or even silver usually make money from contests, endorsements, doing ice shows.

Finally I read in the Wall Street Journal Snowboarder Shaun White is making more then $1 million dollars.
