Battlestar Galactica Show Runner Ron Moore Dishes on Starbuck, Slobber and Those Secret Cylons
Note: Do not read this if you haven't seen the season finale of Battlestar Galactica!
Frakkin' A! How frakkin' good was that season finale?!
If you watch Battlestar Galactica (and if you don't, you are so missing out!), your jaw is still on the floor following the revelation of four more Cylon models, not to mention the return of someone very special whom we thought we had lost.
To help you recover from the shock and regain your bearings (it's so hard to make intergalactic treks without bearings), I rang up Battlestar Galactica show runner Ronald D. Moore to find out what the frak is going on—and asked him to answer some of your burning questions.
And by the way, after last night's season finale and from the interview you're about to read, I'm convinced the "D" in Ronald D. Moore stands for "diabolical genius."
The identities of the four Cylons are so shocking! Tory's always been a little iffy, but the loyalties of Anders, Tigh and the Chief seemed beyond question, and they led the resistance on New Caprica. None of them were the usual suspects. Is there any sort of relationship between that sort of human loyalty and their Cylonity?
I don't know that it's directly connected. If you're asking if that was part of the plan to have them take that cover, then no. They're very much unaware of how they could be Cylons, they're confused by the knowledge, and they don't have an agenda. It's not the same as when Sharon was a Cylon—they haven't been to the Cylon parties. All they really know is they're Cylons. They have this revelation to themselves of what their true nature is, but beyond that they have no idea what the agenda is or if they have an agenda or how this could have happened. They're very much in the dark, much like the audience is.
And just because there will be debate, can you confirm that they are Cylons?
Yes, they're Cylons.
Will we meet the fifth Cylon eventually, and when?
Yes, I think we will eventually reveal the fifth Cylon. "When" is a tougher question to answer, because we haven't really decided ourselves.
And you won't tell us this if you know what's good for you, but have we met that Cylon before?
Oh, I can't answer that.
I have questions that were emailed from readers. The first one is from Alesia: "In one of the podcasts, you said 'Maelstrom' [where Starbuck dies] was the beginning of the third act of the series. What would you say was the break between the first and second acts?"
Oh, that's an interesting question. I would say it was the year's leap forward that was the end of the first act. The story of New Caprica—that, to me, was the second act of the show.
Now, Starbuck seems to be back, but is Katee Sackhoff contracted to do season four? Is there more Starbuck story to tell?
Yes, Katee will be back with us for season four. We couldn't let her go.
What can you tell us about the "special two-hour extended event that will air during fourth quarter 2007 and be released on DVD by Universal Studios Home Entertainment thereafter"?
You're not by chance reading from a press release, are you? We think of it essentially as two extra episodes, and it will not pick up directly from the huge cliffhanger we have at the end of season three with the revelations of Cylons and Starbuck. The extended episodes will essentially go back and tell a story about the Pegasus. We'll deal with events in the past that we've never shown before, but those two eps will also set up some things that will pay off in the fourth season.

I agree with the others when they say Starbuck is a Cylon. It really threw me that the others were though. Galen has a baby too so there is another half cylon child. I think Starbuck must have downloaded when the raptor exploded. I wish they would show an episode where she "wakes" up from that and realizes she's a cylon. Now that would be interesting!! I'm sure "frak"would be used every other word there. And I thought she got a mind trip when she was told she had a daughter - Wow!
I don't understand how they all could not know that they are cylons. Cylons don't grow up like humans from babies to adult they just start out as the finished product right?
Also, I can't believe Tighe is a cylon - he's so much older. They had to have started this kind of thing a while ago.
Such a great series. I really hope they answer these questions! I can't believe we have to wait so long to see new episodes!! 2008!!!!!!!!!!!Seems like forever!

I am STILL not convinced that Tyrol and the other 3 are actually cylons. They do have something weird going on, but it almost seems to simple for them to JUST be cylons. Maybe they are actually descendants of Earth...after all, that was a song created and performed by Earthlings (at least I assume Eric Clapton is and Jimi Hendrix was an Earthling).
Either way, I don't think Starbuck is a cylon...I think she is special in some way obviously, but I think it has more to do with her ancient bloodline. I think the real cylon here is Roslin! Did you notice last night that she felt something right before the power outage and she has been sick since they got close to that nebula? Plus, she was in the dream with Athena and Number 6, chasing after Hera.
The big question here is WHY 2008??? I can't wait that long!

A question I've always had was how did the cylons create the human models to begin with. I think that the cylons found earth during their exile between the two wars and modeled the different versions after humans found there. I also think that the reason there are two groups of humanlike cylons has to do with why they arent still at earth. A lot of theories surrounding battlestar assume that this is taking place in the present, and that earth is how we know it. Could be the past or the future, or another reality alltogether.
Whatever the story is, I hate that I have to wait until 2008 to find out.

Tempted as I am to ***** and rant on us all BSG fans having a YEAR TO WAIT....AARRRRGGGHHH!!! I'll compose myself civil-like (grrrrrr!!!!).
I think it's safe to assume there's some quantum/temporal time travel thing going on w/ the amazing return of Starbuck. I mean, her badly damaged Viper did explode.....we saw that. So explain how she buzzes Lee with a pristine Viper???
Do Cylons have fine classic rock music tastes? "All Along The Watchtower"? That is sooo cool!!! I thought for a second BSG was picking up faint Earth originated radio music signals, long travelled in space.
And just how do the four all meet together and know they're Cylon?? I don't think human hybrid Cylons have been around 40 years. Tighe may have been killed and switched with a replicant copy while held in Cylon custody on New Caprica.
Now THIS GETS DEEP, people......I'm still spechless.....
So....the BSG cast all get a long vacation. Oh.....wait a sec!! BSG writers--back to work, guys: you got to tie up a helluva lot of loose ends--starting with the ones from season 2 you failed to answer in season 3!!!! DUHHHH!! Oh, and you opened a dozen or so more for season 4??? You guys are ballsy.....on top of what....making us wait till......
..........2008!!!???!!!

I doubt the 4 you saw gathered are really cylons but rather 'something else'. My reasoning is simple: there's no WAY the writers would have cylons tuned into a Jimi Hendrix tune! But the music is how the cylons are tracking the fleet somehow.
Also, Starbuck cannot be one of the 5. She actually had a dysfunctional childhood with a real live dysfunctional mother, so she's got to be somehow different. Possibly tuned into the Ancients with her visions of the Eye and contact with Earth.

The 5th cylon is Admiral Adama. He was ratted out in the begining episodes and never did complete his blood test. The signs were to apparant and then its been very silent .... too silent. It's going to blow everyone away when it comes out next season! Lee and Zack (lee's dead brother) have a different father and the Admiral never knew. Starbuck is back....and jumped to earth in the malestorm. There will be some mumbo jumbo scientic reason with destiny wrapped up in it. The final 5 cylons are a different faction of the others that broke off from the others.

I agree that Starbuck is the 5th cylon. Now that we know that cylons are on the ship, seems to me they'll end up living together on Earth. I would like to see the history of the cylons. I think that's the key to the whole story.
I love this series. It's the best.

Remember when Diana saw the missing Cylon? I think it's Starbuck! The only ones who could figure out the captured Raider were who??? Sharon and Starbuck? And Starbuck keeps getting injured and she heals quickly. She is also way way sexual, like the Cylons, and the men who have had her really get hooked, like she's a Cylon!!

Battlestar Galactica replaced into an staggering coach until eventually they landed on New Caprica.. it went downhill from there. This season is selecting up a sprint nevertheless, too undesirable they desperate to make an effort over the final season. lol
