If it is sort of a brownish cloudy color. You probably gave your fish too much food. Make sure you give your fish only as much as it can eat, and then scoop out any excess. Another thing to do is make sure the food you buy says it wont cloud water.

If it is a greenish color, it is a free floating algae. Besides changing the water often you could make sure it doesn't get any direct sunlight. You could also add live plants to suck up the nutrients. There is another option if none of these work. Go find or buy some Daphnia(zooplankton). Put these in a very fine mesh bag. And let it sit in your aquarium. These things actually eat the free floating algae.

If none of these are the right answer, you might want to get a bigger filter or reduce the amount of fish in your tank. As a last resort, you could do a tank tear down. This is taking everything out of your tank (fish, gravel, plants, etc.). Then completely drain and clean the tank. You should also clean the gravel, clean your filter and change the filter pad or media. Then put everything back together and cycle the tank (thats a whole different topic). You will need an alternate place to put your fish for a week or two.

It's probably not dirty, but it is cloudy. The more chemicals you add,the worse it seems to get. It could be the water in your tap is that way right now. It could be bacteria bloom. You may need to cycle the water or start fresh again Maybe the gravel was so full of debris and you only changed the water but left the gravel dirty.

sounds like you need a filter & quick. the larger the tank, the bigger the filter. go to pet land or some other pet/fish store. tell them what you have & they'll help you. most of the staff at these stores are pros. you'll be in good hands. but do it quick!
