I have an old cracked tub surround. No money to replace it. Is there a water proof paint I can use on the wall if I remove the surround? Any better ideas?

When you tear out the old surround more than likely it will tear the Sheetrock underneath. This will have to be patched. You can then use FOR A SHORT time frame a high gloss kitchen and bath paint, but be sure to cover the drip edges of the tub. These will a rolled edge of the tub against any walls that the tub touches. If you do not water will flow into the walls. This is a mere band aid and not suggested for a long duration. Good luck

Maybe it would be cheaper to repair the cracks. The paint idea probably won't give you the results you hope for. The fiberglass surrounds aren't that expensive compared to tile, you may be better off replacing it with a new one. At the very least you can use some silicone caulking as a temporary seal so you don't do any damage behind the enclosure.

You can get a new tub surround for right at $100 at Home Depot. About 1 hour to install. Why try to repair broken one when it can be replaced inexpensively?

You can put up tileboard around the tub. It's not very expensive at all - about $15 for a 4'x8' sheet around here. You would probably need 3 sheet and then a special adhesive to apply it to the wall.
