how come indians dont have to pay taxes, and get free education, and fish and hunt without licenses, and noone else can. they claim its because its part of their heritage, but then they shouldnt get to use guns or have tvs or things if they want to live like that. how is that fair to us taxpayers.

Natives got most of their rights through treaties signed by the government when they were taken off their land and put on reserves, then taken off the reserve and put in schools. The took them off fertile land and pit them on shitty land. When the shitty land they were on turned out to be valuable, they kicked them off and put them on worse land. As for not paying taxes they are only exempt while living or working on a reserve. If they live off the reserve they have to pay taxes like everyone else.
I'm not sure why they are exempt since when all the treaties were signed there was no taxes.

I can kind of see your point. At my college, if someone has at least 1/16 native american blood, its a full scholarship, no questions asked. It dosen't really seem fair when kid down the hall found out he had a great-great-great grandparent that just happened to be native american, but could obviously care less about heritage.

I don't think it has anything to do with history, for the people who are going to say that. No one that saw any of that is alive today. You learned about it in history class, the same way everyone else did. Its regrettable that it happened, but its been a very long time since native americans were being hunted down in the US. Its time to let it go. There are much more pressing issues to worry about then things that can't be changed.

Treaties are what give the tribes the right to hunt, fish, and have a free education. These are treaties that were written up by the american government in the beginning for the land that they moved the tribes off of. The treaties guaranteed a free education, fishing, hunting, and land. Many of these treaties were broken and remade to suite the government.

Well, for one thing we removed their way to have an established identity. It seems to me that, in the past, until almost recently, A too large percentage of native Americans were struggling with many issues that related to the history of the group, or tribe. They felt that in order to succeed in the white male dictated order of things, they were expected to adopt the white male philosophy that they, the white guys, had dominion over the world. So now, our wondrously generous government has decided that money is the cure of all evils. Those subsidies that you called "everything free", is payment to cure the evil. Fortunately, our American aborigine population saw the waste of human lives, and began to stress education, because that was a way out of that senseless, wasteful morass of debilitating generosity.

Because they deserve to have everything--think about it---thier people were here first, but a group of Europeans came over and took over the land that you and your family have lived on for generations--you decide to stand up for yourself and you are met with sudden death. The land that you and your family have lived on for generations is not purchased, but given away to 'settle' and cultivate to make an economy. Also because you stood up for yourself--you are killed along with many of your brethren and are reduced down to a trail of blood tears. Whole nations of your people are wiped out and languages lost because your red skin (the sun kissed it with red clay) doesn't match what is considered beautiful. Life for Native Americans (that is the correct term to use for these beautiful people)--that is another thing they are NOT Indians--Indians come from India--that is a Christopher Columbus Boo-Boo--his bad! Native Americans have tribal names and a rich history and should be compensated for the ancestral burial grounds that were destroyed to build this here great nation we call AMERICA!

Yep--- and they get the very best real estate in the entire USA. Verdant fields--- beautiful forests--abundant clean rivers and sparkling streams. Why, those so-called native Americans have always been spoiled rotten, from the time of the first European settlers who were happy to share all their diseases and shiny beads, to now--
Life is just not fair!!!

Wow. I eagerly await the flames which this question will ignite...

The reason for this is because people today are trying to make up for what their ancestors did to other peoples' ancestors by compensating the descendants.
