I can hear everything and instead of getting used to it, it is agvating me and causing me tension. Can I learn to accept it?

My aunt grew up in, and lived most of her life in, a house right next to the brooklyn el. Every twenty minutes a loud train went by. She didn't even hear it. People can get used to anything. Other than that, there are four possible solutions, aside from talking to your loud neighbors, which you choose is up to you and IANAL.

1. You are entitled to the 'quiet enjoyment' of the property that you are renting. You have every right to complain to the landlord, and even break the lease or withold your rent until the problem is resolved.

2. You could soundproof your apartment to eliminate the worst of the noise.

3. You could buy a white or pink noise generator to mask the noises.

4. You could wear earplugs or noise canceling headphones or listen to music with earbuds.

A last option might be mild tranquilizers to eliminate your irritation, but I think that's a bit extreme.

You can, but you don't have to. You're paying rent, just the same as they are. First, talk to the neighbors. They may not realize that they're making as much noise as they are. Talk to them a few times about it, and if they don't stop, take it up with the landlord. That person has a responsibility to make sure that your apartment is livable, and that includes noise pollution. If all fails, then wait until they're having a particually noisy party and call in a noise complaint. Keep doing it. Inform the landlord every time you do. Trust me, they'll stop. Or hell, be petty about it. Put on Hanson at full blast and leave for the day. Good luck!

No and you shouldn't have to.If it's thin walls the reason why you're hearing everything, then you should find somewhere else to live.If it's you're neighbors being rude and disrespectful and loud then you should talk to them and the manager about it.Don't put up with it.You're paying good money to stay there just like them.If you go through the steps and it continues then get the police involved. There is such a thing as a noise tolerance in most cities.

I think it's possible. I lived near a freeway, and at first I noticed the noise from the freeway, until one day, I realized it seemed like it was quiet, But lo and behold, the freeway was still full of cars whizzing northward and southward.

And it was the same when I lived near an airport...same as above paragraph.

Man...I realized I lived in some busy areas! No wonder rent was cheap! LOL!

The thing though, is that loud neighbors are not a constant sound as cars and planes. Maybe not?

I'm not sure, I have noisey neighbors and I don't even notice it. But when people people come to visit me over night, it bugs the crap out of them! If you stay there for over a month and you don't find yourself getting used to it, and your neighbors aren't quieter after speaking to them about the situation, then you can get out of your lease because of the noise. (that's provided your landlord doesn't kick THEM out because of the noise)

You can in time, but why live somewhere that is causing you stress. You should speak to your neighbours, perhaps they are unaware how much of their noise you are hearing.

there's a possibility that you'll be used to it, and there's also a chance that you might move away from it. there's also a possibility that you might turn your apartment sound-proof someday or you might also resort in listening to something else that's more pleasant to hear.
