Why do people, in every conversation, want to know what's new with the other party? The answer is always "nothing", so why do we expect more than that with every new conversation? Is life boring, or are our expectations too high?

In response to that last answer...It's not that my friends and I are unaware of things going on in the world, it's that everything that's happening has been discussed so fully that it's not interesting anymore. And for everyone else; I didn't ask specifically why no one ever has anyhting to report in conversation, I just wanted to know why life isn't more exciting. Conversation was just an example. How often do you say "I'm bored" or "This is boring" in a day? Think of it that way.

Your expectations are too low! If you want an exciting life then have one! Don't be complacent. Too many people get into a rut & don't do anything but go to work then come home & sit in front of a TV or computer.
What do you want to do? What makes your heart race? What do you dream of? Do it! Life is too short not to enjoy it!
I want to go rockclimbing and skydiving this year. If someone asks me what's new & I can say "I went skydiving!" then that's pretty exciting. Of course if you were to ask me what's new in the past year I would have a lot to tell:
I bought a new house in a new community, I've been showing my artwork & selling paintings. I've been performing at a local bar as a singer/songwriter & got my picture on the front of the paper & met my Mr. Right (a fellow musician). I'm working on a CD. I did a local radio interview...
Take risks. Do what you love. Travel. Find a hobby. Get involved in a club or group. Try something new. Go hiking. Life won't come to you, you have to go after it. So get out there & do something! Then when someone comes to ask you what's new you can say "well I'm taking a cooking class or karate or I went horseback riding or I took a trip" or whatever you'd like to do.
Life is what you make it so make it interesting!!!

I believe that it's both boring and too demanding... People ask so many questions that they think that we know, yet we have NO CLUE! The other day, my dad asked me what I was doing, and I said nothing! I mean, at least I was breathing! I think that we need some time to think about exactly what we did or what we're doing... Plus life has not much to offer yet your parents and grandparents will tell you otherwise which I think is wrong... They really think they know everything... Expect little from others, yet expect a lot from yourself... I think that it's a great motto! Life may be exciting at times, but as we think about the most exciting things over and over again, then we start to just suck all of the excitement out of EVERYTHING! We just need to learn to relax, and work on our social skills... Maybe the world would be a better place if we did...

Life is unbelievably stimulating and exciting.
It only seems boring to you and your friends because you don't know what to look at. You have no basis for comparison so you don't notice subtle changes. It sounds like you have no sense of fine detail. You and your friends possibly only vaguely see large issues or at least issues that are large to you.
For example, here we are in the midst of huge and crucial debates that see-saw on a daily bases regrading global warming, executive privilege, inflation, a war in the mid east, elections, and a thousand local issues and you say "nothing" is new.
Because of your lack of observational skills, nothing seems to change. Hopefully as you mature and integrate into the real world you will notice just how much IS going on.

Life is not boring. We are not enough patient or lively.
When we ask "what's new" it's a way to start a dialog. The dialog could then continue and other topics could emerge. Among different topics, we find some to be trivial, funny, or informative. In dealing with others, there's opportunity for laughter as well as learning.

LIFE, like anything and everything else, is what WE make it!!
"life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all" helen keller
we choose how we spend every minute of every day, we can seek new knowledge, experiences and continue to grow or we can stay in a rut, the choice is ours!!

Life is outgoing and dynamic. To allow it to stagnate invite boredom. So keep going. You need not expect too high. Whatever you get everyday is a blessing. Keep counting!

They are just showing interest in you and concern as well.
If nothing, just said "Just like that loh... ..."
If there's updates, you won't be asking such a question.

life is what you make it, i know thats so cliche, but its so true, whatever your into, whatever floats your boat, you should chase it and see what happens, even if you dont get to where you want to be, sometimes the want is better than the have.
