What position does a team have to be to make it to playoffs. I believe they have to rank 8th or better but i'm not to certain. Thanks in advance :)

your right the top 8 advance into the playoffs in each conference with the top 3 division leaders taking the 1, 2, and 3 seed regardless if there is a second place team with more pts. for example
the three division leaders have pts (A)96 (B)93 (C)80 but the second place team in team a's division has 82 pts (D). The order would be:
A
B
C
D
because team C is number one in their division

The top team from each division and followed by the top 5 point totals (non-division winners) for a total of 8 teams per conference.

Yes, they have to be in the top 8 in their conference to make the playoffs. Their are 15 teams in each conference.

1st to 8th seed in each conference makes the playoffs...
so in all, 16 teams compete in the NHL playoffs...

You are correct, although THEORETICALLY what could happen is there are 8 teams with better records than them in the conference, they could still get in because they lead their division, as others upstairs have pointed out.

You are correct with the top 8 theory, the first three seeds though are given to the division leaders.

Practice, man, practice.
Play as hard when they are ahead as when they are behind.
Put in three solid periods of hockey every night.
Goaltending is key.
They've got to want it more than the other teams.
Oh, and also finish in the top eight in their conference (East or West)
