One, secular, democratic country in which everyone was equal, refugees had the right to return, and Jews and Palestinians could live anywhere they wanted to.

What's wrong with this plan?

anthony, the point is that the country wouldn't be Muslim or Jewish, but a secular democracy.

And chi guy it may be impractical, but how practical is endless war?

No, there would not be peace.

The fighting is not about land or religion, it was at one time, but now the confilct is about power. Who gets to control what.

Think of two little kids, they are fighting over a toy. MINE MINE MINE, back and forth, eventually the arguing goes on for so long that the kids forget about the toy and it's all about proving the other kid wrong. It's not even about wanting the toy for your own uses, it's about one kid wanting the toy just so the other kids can't have it.

once I hear people say Israel is the only democracy contained in the midsection east, I ought to snicker at their lack of expertise. Israel is a reasonably contemporary eu/American Apartheid settler challenge occupying the rustic of yet another people, and stored artificially alive with the would of yank protection rigidity power. Iran is the only democracy contained in the midsection east. Iran is considered by utilising many between the cradles of civilization with a manner of existence and historic previous hundreds of years previous. they have judicial, government and legislative branches. They go with a president each 4 years (sound common?) they have a ideally suited chief this is elected and oversees the judiciary. The legislative branch has 290 contributors, elected for 4-3 hundred and sixty 5 days words.

i'm living in israel at the moment, and a lot of thinking people agree that that would work.

but...

There was a president a while back - sorry forget the name. who almost made it happen. But a lot of fundamentalist jews were against him, and in the end he was killed right in the middle of a huge public gathering. And they still have a ceremony every year to remember him.

So the question is how to achieve it?

Please note that there are a lot of arabs in israel who are happy to be israeli and don't want their own country. The problem is only with certain communities not all arabs (or all jews either)

The main problem is that neither side would agree to such a deal. There has been years of bloodshed on both sides and it has really gotten to the point where each side hates the other so much that there is no compromise. While constant war and conflict is not in either side's best interest, their hatred for each other and desire for retribution and retaliation are more important than finding a true solution to their mutual problem.

The Jews and the Palestinians will never get along until Jesus comes back.

If it was one country, the Muslims would flock there....and Jewish Isreal would end at the ballot box.

It doesn't matter if it was a secular democracy.....they would still hate each other.

Wouldn't work because one group would hold the majority, by far.

Long live Palestine! And, long live Israel. Separate, and fully independent nations.

Nope. Too much blood has been spilled for too many years. You would have to separate the adults and allow the children to interact over a generation. Why were they not given a piece of Germany as a home I'll always wonder.

Your idea assumes rational behavior from religious zealots. Not a very good bet. Radical Islam's #1 priority is the elimination of Israel.

There will not be peace as long as there are Arabs living west of the Jordan River. Arabs want neither another state nor peace. Anyone who has followed events in that region should know this.

Because the muslims and the jews hate each other! They'd just end up killing each other on every street corner.
