Why Does The Character Leslie have to be killed off? i know the books have already told the story that she's dead because the rope breaks and she fell down the creek.. problem is.. shouldn't this movie be a fairy tale or something? it's a very heartbreaking and somewhat boring movie because all the fun is gone all of a sudden.. it would be better if the directors give it a little twist by having Leslie still alive... Why?

And here's a dumb question by my friend..
how deep is the creek? it looks completely shallow to him. although i know the last time they went together the waters have rise up a little.. but not until that deep right? anybody mind giving me answers to all this? ^.^ thx..

well, coming to age doesn't mean someone has to die for that person to come of age.. lol.. did u mean leslie has to die for jess to realise and open his mind wide open? or did leslie's usage is over and she has no more use to bring jess anymore imagination and ways to deal with life?

When I first read the book back in elementary school, I asked the same question. I think the reason why the author killed this character was because she was placed in the plot line to help bring this world of fantasy to the protagonist. In the story, Jess lived with a family who overlooked him; it was as if he was trapped and running was his way to stand out and shine. Since Jess had finally found the courage to stand out on his own - talking to the teacher, finding the keys and giving them back to his dad, etc. Leslie was no longer needed in the plot line. A harsh way to describe the reason, but in my opinion that was why.

As to the question regarding the creek, it didn't look shallow at all in the movie, but one has to take into consideration that there are rocks and other objects down there. For all we know Leslie could've hit her head and been knocked unconscious, and then drowned after she had fallen. Since we never saw what happened though, we'll never know.

I hope that answered your questions.

Okay let me answer this question with a question..

What if in To Kill A Mockingbird Tom was found innocent?

Two reasons 1.)Character development the main character is Jesse and the death of Leslie is a major plot point 2.)You don't want to veer too far from the original source material if the original source material is integral to the story 3.)real life says not every ending is a happy ending but not every ending is complete.

If you slipped and hit your skull and were rendered unconscious face down in the tub you could drown in as little as 3 inches of water 6 inches if on your side.

Even though it's supposedly marketed as a fairy tale, it's not, and traditionally, fairy tales are very dark anyway. I found nothing boring about the movie. It is less about "Terabithia" and more about the friendship and coming of age. I think the twist was the fact that Leslie did not survive. Happy endings are very predictable.

I have no idea how deep the creek is, but if she hit her head and fell unconscious, she would definitely drown.

Leslie has to die for the book to have any meaning. It's a coming of age novel. The protagonist cannot come of age until her death.

In the book she hits her head on a rock, that kills her. It doesn't matter how deep the river is.

The book isn't a fairy tale. It's a story about dealing with the death of a friend.

Well, if she fell and hit her head she could have drowned even if it was a shallow creek. I heard 6 inches of water is enough to drown in.

btw, she died by hitting her head on a rock in the creek...not from drowning...
and i actually thought that this book had a VERY important theme to it......
so the movie is SUPPOSED to be serious...in the old movie, it actually sticks to the book. it's trying to show dealing with many hardships in life, but how you can still find ways to pull through

Didn't much care for the movie. It dragged on with no real plot.
