Should people who turn in a class project late(after the due date) receive a penalty such as points deducted or a lower grade than the people who turned it in on time?

yes If you can't do it in the same time as the rest of the group then why should you get the same credit as if you turned it in on time?

It depends on the reason for the late project. When I was teaching, students often handed in assignments late, but if the excuse was a good one (by good I mean legitmate, understandable, and most importantly verifiable) then they would not be penalized. Otherwise, they got marked down 10 points for every day the project was overdue.

It's funny how many people assume that you have handed in something late as opposed to possibly noticing that someone else handed something in late and still got the same grade as you. It would seem that the majority of Yahoo answerers are quite incapable of answering a question without judging (and possibly mis-judging) the asker.

Yes, otherwise, what is the difference between those who submitted it on time and those who didn't? If there are some extenuating circumstances which have been brought to the instructor's notice before hand and an extension obtained, it would be a different story.

Basically whether some thing is fair or not is best judged by putting ourselves in that position and thinking impartially.

Yes it's fair. You knew the deadline ahead of time. Everyone else had to sweat out the project on time. It would not be fair to the people who turned it in on time for you to get the same grade as they did if you turned yours in late.

Abolutely fair. All the people wer given the same time frame and the people who met that deadline deserve to be graded better than the people who failed to meet the deadline.

In the "real world" failure to meet your deadlines could result in termination from employment, fines, and in some cases criminal problems.

Of course it's fair. Consider that a life lesson. If you hire a person to do a five hour job and that person takes ten hours. Didn't you just get screwed?

Yup - they had more time to make it better - thus the deduction in points.... unless of course their dog ate the first project.

It is conditioning for the real world. On a job, if something has to be done by a certain time and date, that's what they expect. Period. No excuses,
