some kind of strange character that's not a font. i think it's an ascii symbol, but I've never seen it before. and no clue what it's for of course.

The ascii code is 178 for that symbol: ▓
I think the purpose is for displaying graphic in the DOS screen as last time no GUI interface.

I also think that they are come sort of strange character codes that your system is unable to convert in English (thru ACSII OR unicode).
