I was in a European country for 3 months doing freelance work for a company located in the United States. I know I have to file federal tax, but what about state tax? I didn't really live in any state when I earned that income.

Your domicile does not change during temporary absences so you must claim that income on your state tax return and pay any tax due.

I don't think that you have to pay state income tax but please donot quote me on that. Contact the IRS.
