Click on start click on run type in msconfig next go to startup files uncheck all programs. save and reboot, next restart computer, it will say you are in diagnostic startup click OK go to start click on all programs click on disk clean up clean all files, next click start all programs system tools then click on defrag, after defragging reboot, after reboot click on start run type in msconfig recheck all programs and save reboot. That will do it. You are shutting down all unused programs that Will cause defrag to restart when the drive changes.

Your screensaver or antivirus program might be interfering. Try Disk Cleanup,Scandisk, and defrag in Safe Mode.

If you are new to Safe Mode:

Turn your PC on or Restart. As soon as you see the black and white screen, press and hold the F8 key. Continue holding until you see a black and white menu. Safe Mode is F3 or F5. It looks weird but that’s because Windows is not loaded.

Click Start, Programs, run your Disk Cleanup, Scandisk, defrag, AV program, install, uninstall, whatever.

When it is finished, Restart.

You will probably find your icons messed up. Just drag them back into place.

Try doing a disk cleanup first before the defrag. If you are using Windows 98 or ME then it may not be possible to defrag. You may need to do reformat back to factory settings.

when defragmenting do not run any program or access the drive. always run Check Disk before Defragmenting. Is your file too large. yes ! windows defragmenter fails to defragment too large files. Check you have 15% of free space in the drive.you may consider to use Vopt XP , i think it is a good defragmenter. Download free trial for 30 days .
this should work.
