I'm not precisely sure what type of answer you're looking for, but yes, I can play by ear and I do read music. However, I don't think it's necessary for someone to have to know how to read music in order to play by ear. Certain individuals can sit down at a piano and play a piece that they previously heard from memory without any music at all, whether or not they know how to read music.

I used to be able to play piano by ear when I was a child. Haven't played in years. But I was taught to read sheet music, but always found it easier to pick it out on my own by hearing it. I could do both. I simply cannot sight-read though if my very life depended on it. Lol!

I play piano by ear but I can read music and write music also. Do you want to hear some of my playing? E-mail me and I'll give you the web address for one of my arrangements.

I play all instruments by ear, I have never learned to read music. I would like to though but I am afraid it will ruin my gift.
