Yes it is possible depending on the model of the computer, for instance Compaq and hp dell and gateway are less likely to be up graded but other built computers can be upgraded, but you need to know what form factor it is atx is the newer power supply and if you have one you can change the Mother board. However changing the motherboard does not mean your computer will be faster, it may do more things like handle usb ports if it don't already. if you change the mother board you will want to increase the speed of the Processor and expand the memory and get a bigger and faster hard drive to help speed it up, you will need a better video card as well one with large 512 megs or more ram on the video card to speed it up. You can increase the motherboard side bus speed which will help the speed at what your computer operates at. however you will always be limited to the slowest thing on your computer. for instance most cases it's the hard drive or the Modem depending on what you are doing. There are ways around the hard drive by striping them with a raid card and or adding a sata drive just keep all this in mind when thinking about upgrading sometimes it's cheaper to buy a new box.

it is possible, but very messy, all parts have to be compatible with each other. Web sites such as www.newegg.com and www.motherboard.org helps you to buy and determine compatible models with very competitive pricing.
