It isn't just the fast food that is hurting people. In my opinion, it is the manipultive advertisements, colors and wrappings they put over the food that have a very quiet and subliminal effect on the human mind.
Studies have shown that red and yellow are two colors that make the human mind feel hunger. Even the quiet and seemingly unnoticable music that is being played in the back ground often determines the speed in which we eat and drink. The studies done on advertising, hypnotism and the media show that people buy and consumn more under certain conditions. And although we don't realize it, all people are susceptable to it.
The fact that the products being sold are high in fat and carbs is what makes the fast food industry seem so sinister in their tactics to sell...especially the ones that target colors, lighting, shapes, smells and music to target children. The marketing strategy is what is creating such uproar. It goes a little beyond self discipline as they are entering the subconscious part of the human mind that can almost always over ride reason and responsibility.
Yes hypnotism does work and yes it is being used to a degree in advertising sells. We don't need regulation on Fast Food restaurants as much as we need some restrictions on advertising methods that are too close to hypnotism and mind control. Some methods are already illegal but maybe more need to be.
There is a great film called "The Truth About Lies" in the Bill Moyer Series called "The Public Mind". Some university libraries have it and the series explains lies, manipulation, hypnotism and the media. Fascinating.
Because of the advertising techniques they use and who they market their advertising to, I think Fast Food businesses have a large role in creating obesity in America.

Fast food is not what's causing obesity. I eat fast food all the time, and I never gain any weight. I start gaining weight when I drink a lot of whole milk. Whole milk is loaded with fat. Overweight people should always drink the lowfat milks. I think drinking too many sodas causes weight gain too. Most sodas are loaded with sugar. Lack of exercise may be part of the problem, but I think what really causes obesity is over-indulgence. Think about some of those buffet restaurants. I have seen enormous people consume unlimited quantities of food at those buffets. I think that's the main problem. I think some people don't know when to stop eating, and there is so much food that can be consumed in America. Americans grow their own food. There is no lack of food in America. A place like Ethiopia is entirely different. You can't grow much of anything there. What is the obesity rate in Ethiopia?

It is a little complicated i think, because people like that food and buy it. So i think if people don't want to be obese or suffer from diseases like cholesterol they should stop eating junk food. On the other hand, i agree that fast food should be blame and held accountable for the rising problem of obesity in America. One of the things that causes those problems is the oil they use, because they use it over and over and maybe don't change it. We never know what is happening in that kitchen. :)
Good Luck on your Essay!

I believe the fast food industry has definitely contributed to the obesity in the USA. People in these busy times have convinced themselves that they have little or no time to make healthy meals at home.
I do not think that people should be blaming the fast food industry for their obesity completely, as we all have the ability to say no and the ability to not order supersize everything that could feed an entire family with all the fat and caloric content.
Many people do not want to take responsibility for their own lives, and choose to blame everyone and everything else around them for whatever problems they have. This does not work.
I was not taken to fast food restaurants when I was growing up, and do not take my children. I am not saying that we have never eaten there, but it is very seldom. They have learned to eat in a more healthy manner, and actually do not like the low quality fatty items found in many fast food restaurants.
I am sure that you are familiar with the gentleman who made the video documentary "Supersize Me." He ate fast food for all his meals for one month, and ended up having many health problems because of it.
Some of his doctors were so concerned about his blood pressure that they tried to talk him out of completing the month of eating that way. This was about three weeks into the time period.
I know people who know that they should not be consuming fast food, and will "hide" it from their family and friends by consuming it away from home or work by eating in their car, of course they cannot hide the fact that they are overweight or fighting high blood pressure.
I always cringe inwardly when people tell me about this huge meal they have consumed, and then they add, but I had a "diet" soda, like they really believe that is going to help the fact that they consumed enough calories and fat for three or four meals.
The fast food restaurants have contributed to the problem, but the fact that people cannot control themselves is equally to blame.

Yes, fat food have caused obesity. But I would not say
that fast food should be blamed or held accountable. A person that orders and pays for the unhealthy foods should change their way of eating. They are the ones that made the choice to eat it.
Some of the fast food now offer another choice or foods that are good for you.

No. People are obese because they choose to eat too much, don't take the time to eat full meals at home often enough, and choose not to get enough exercise. The only thing the fast-food industry is guilty of is making food that tastes so good at a somewhat low price and is served fast.

Fast food takes the blame for a lot of health problems these days. I think the white refined sugars are more likely the culprit and we can blame that on one fact... the healthy foods will cost you an arm and a leg in most any grocery store while the affordable foods are everything imaginable that will ruin you. Sad, isn't it?

Fast food shouldn't be held accountable, people should have more self control. No one is forcing you to eat thigns that are unhealthy. If you eat it in moderation, fast food isn't bad for you. If you over do it, it is. That's a personal choice, not the fast food industry's.
