Not looking for the traditional room dividers - too big and too bulky and usually too expensive.

Not real sure what you want but have you thought of using some kind of PVC pipe (diam of your choice). The black pipe would be more flexible but if you just want a straight divider use the white pvc. There are all kinds of fittings to use. As a room divider I would use as many tees as necessary to span your wall. I would use vertical pieces to hold the divider to the desired height. I would anchor the system to pieces of 2X12 lumber resting on the floor.
Specifics: Let's say you want a divider 12 ft long and 6 ft high.
-cut the top pvc pipe to 3ft, 3ft, 6ft.
-put the 6ft pc in the middle and use the top of tee fittings to attach the 3ft pieces with pvc glue.
-the remaining opening of the tees will point down and you will glue in 6ft lengths of pvc to the tee.
-find and mount the appropriate flange fitting to attach to the blocks of wood and glue the vertical pvc into them.
-hang shower curtains or whatever you choose from the 3ft, 6ft, 3ft sections

All of the above materials can be found at a home improvent store (Home depot, Menards, etc)

I think I would use 1 1/2 inch pvc. It will be pretty stabile. Use a spray to paint to a color of your choice.

For a ready made divider, try a medical supply company. They sell the type of divider that you would use to separate a room into smaller areas...such as privacy between beds in a nurse's health room at a school. You could decorate the material to match your color scheme or room theme.
