Edward R. Murrow essentially ended the witchhunt that McCarthy had created. McCarthy had the whole country panicked that everyone else was a Communist, which of course meant they must be anti-American. As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Anti-American Activities, he held Senate hearings, bringing up many actors and actresses, among others, and asking the famous words, "Are you now, or have you ever been, a Communist?" People were encouraged to turn in others they suspected of being Communists. Many turned in others to avoid being accused themselves. Those who were declared Communists, or who admitted it, were often blacklisted, and their careers were ruined, even after the witchhunt ran its course. The hysteria finally began to subside when Edward R. Murrow, the well-respected newscaster, was called before the committee. When McCarthy asked, "Are you now, or have you ever been, a Communist?", Murrow responded,"Have you no shame, Senator?" It made people begin to see the hearings for what they were, and it ruined McCarthy's career, just as he'd ruined so many others. He died an alcoholic a few years after that.
