My wifes great nephew is in the hospitol with exactly the same symptoms right now. He's 4 mos. old. They're running tests, but the doctor is treating him for viral croup. Strange coincidence. He's in Springfield, Mo.

Elevated White Blood cell count is almost always a sign of infection as the immune system has kicked it up a bit to fight off the "invader". In children, this could be a variety of things, some minor and some not so minor. Usually it is a mild infection of some kind easily taken care of with antibiotics. Of course, it is up to the child's pediatrician to make the call.

This would be concerning to me, and would encourage your son or daughter to keep bringing the child back to the doctor, a pediatrician preferably. Usually a high white blood cell count means bacterial infection. Is she on an antibiotic? If this continues, you need to see a doctor who will take it more seriously. The normal wbc count is between around 5 and 10 thousand and in children this young, the norm can be slightly higher. Good luck.

my 2yr old son was in hospital for 3days last year, he had on and off temperatures, for weeks too and his white cells were up, he had antibiotics, but was like this for a month, i thought hed never get over it, they said it was a lymphnode infection, and that his body was fighting it, they also said high white cells and high temp-s are simple virus s , she will get better, best of luck
