The entire thing about other people "making us happy" is alot of nonsense. We are individuals, with lives and choices and hobbies and dreams. Other people enhance our lives, are there for us to share the good times and bad, but when a person says that their partner doesn't make them happy, thats a sign that they are incomplete and unhappy themselves.

Mostly it's because after a certain period of time people grow comfortable with their situation and it's very hard to do something that will radically alter things. To say that being unhappy is always caused by internal issues is ridiculous, anyone who's ever been in an abusive relationship knows that, but it is up to the person who is unhappy to change what it is that making them that way. If they are in a relationship where they are unhappy then they need to get out of the relationship and find someone who will make them happy.

Is the other not making you happy or you not making you happy? You can't be happy all the time. Most people who aren't happy, when asked what would make them happy don't know.
If you really believe it's the other person making you unhappy, you shouldn't stay. But, reasons people do are for money , for the kids, low self esteem, etc.

Paul's answer is a very good one - I agree completely. A spouse who proclaims that they are unhappy with their relationship or that their partner does not make them happy is usually just unhappy with his or her self. Love and happiness are both decisions you make. You are only unhappy if you allow yourself to be. A conscious decision and a little effort could turn your life and your marriage around. Go to counseling, alone or include your spouse. Find out what is really troubling you and allow your spouse to help you figure out an answer.

We stay with them because we are comfortable and don't think we can do ay better, when in reality we can.
