Is this statement not a contradiction? Perhaps it should be better worded as the simplest pleasures in life, for it is my experience that each legitimate joy is exceedingly deep, layered with several different levels of complexities.

Firstly, you should divide the mind, which interprets these pleasures or joys, into its appropriate subdivisions. According to Augustine, The mind is comprised of the sensibilia (that which is interpreted through the bodily senses) and the intellegibilia (that which is interpreted by the intellect). Our ability to recall the schema of objects in the physical world, rely upon our senses, such as sight and sound. When we envision a cat, we do so because we have seen, felt, heard cats previously. However, when we attempt to envision things which transcend the physical world, such as notions of love and hate, we can only do so with our intellect. To envision these abstract thoughts is merely to envision specific examples of love or hate put in action, rather than its essences. We use our senses naturally, while our intellect can often times be complicated and difficult. It is evident that our sensibilia is simpler than our intellgibilia. For this reason, we can expect that the simplest pleasures, or perhaps joys, would be in the confines of our senses.

To interpret simplest, as the most effortless, one would presume that these pleasures or joys would be further confined to involuntary bodily functions. While physiologically these actions may indeed be complicated, like the complexity of the human heart and circulatory system, they do not require any thought. The most simplest functions may however not grant us any joy, but rather perhaps the only joy can come from the collection of these involuntary functions. Certainly no one receives any joy from one's heart beating. Yet our heart, lungs, and other bodily organs in collaboration, working involuntarily, brings forth life. Perhaps the simplest joy in life is life itself, our innate desire and ability to live.

While some people have stated that love is the simplest joy in life, it is quite the opposite. If it were truly the simplest joy, would there not be more love in the world? While it is indeed rewarding and a noble cause, it is difficult.
