Certainly there has always been women with irregular cycles and pregnancy symptoms at times other than pregnancy, so how did they know they were pregnant? Or was it just that they would have to wait until they were showing to be able to tell?

They had primitive tests where they injected a woman's urine into a rabbit, killed the rabbit and looked to see if there was growth in the ovaries or something http://pregnancy.about.com/cs/pregnancytests/a/rabbittest.htm . Before that, I'm guessing they just waited until they felt the baby kicking or started showing.

Missed periods... Internal exams... The average size uterous is about that of small plum, at 8 weeks it's a large orange-grapefruit.
