First, I should tell you that I have an IUD. My periods are pretty regular, every 28 days. I was expecting my period today but it never came. I am also scheduled for sergery this thursday so it's probably stress which is causing my delay but you never know. How long should I give myself before I should take a pregnancy test?

Take one now.

It is possible to be pregnant with an IUD fitted, you need to see a doctor if you are pregnant as it is unlikely you will go full term and miscarages can be dangerous.

Take the test then at least you will know the answer, if you are stressed already you do not need to spend time guessing. Put your mind at rest either way.

Ordinarily, I would recommend patience since nothing is going to change the fact that you have to wait to find out if you are pregnant. But with surgery happening on Thursday, you need to know.

With regular cycles you should have high enough hcg levels after day 14 from conception - but this is from conception which could be a day or two after ovulation. So even if you are pregnant, you might not be able to tell from a home test yet.

A blood test done at your doctors/midwives office can detect the hormone earlier, so it might be a good idea to give a call and go in for a test tomorrow if you still have not started your period.

Good Luck.

If you do not chart or monitor your fertility in any way, and you think you may have conceived, you should wait 19 days (or longer) after having sex to test. Why 19?! Sperm can live approximately 5 days in the proper environment; if the sperm managed to live until you popped an egg, the actual conception could have taken place several days after the sex act that got the sperm there. To make sure you're not testing too early, assume the sperm had very long lives (5 days is considered a very long sperm life) and that conception occurred then. Then allow 14 days for the embryo to implant and develop enough hCG to show up on a pregnancy test (96% of pregnant women will test positive by then.)

This is a mystery I haven't solve yet. I only know that if I ovulated on March 15 and last night I was positive for preggo. thru a blood test at the ER.That's only 10 days right. So it depends. I suggest you get a blood test done since I did two hpt and where negative but the blood came positive. BTW I'm not on pills. I don't use none of that just natural.

I would buy a pack of 2+ test and take one tomorrow and then Wed. If nothing comes back positive you can consider that a negative or you can have them test you thursday before surgery. Good Luck !! Hope you get the answer your looking for.

If you're having surgery, DON'T rely on a store-bought kit. See your doctor right now & get a blood test. They'll be able to tell you a lot faster & alot more accurately. However, you may have just missed your period due to stress over surgery....happens all the time.

Since you're having surgery this Thursday they should do a pregnancy test as one of your prelab bloodwork tests. You can take one yourself as well if you want. I know women with IUDs who've stopped having periods altogether while they have it.

I'd test today. Your surgeon will need to know if you are pg. I agree that it is most likely stress since you are only one day late.
