I'm throwing these items away, so I called the department of sanitation for a special pickup, and they said there was no need for that because the garbagemen would be able to take it all. How could the truck fit all these big items inside?

Most city garbage services have the means to pick up anything you'd like. (within reason) If you are throwing away an excessive amount of large items most often you are charged a little extra but as long as you call ahead they send out a team of guys that take care of it. Sometimes, for instance people who have been evicted call ahead to city services and as long as it's in the front yard they take it.
How can the truck fit all these items inside, well they don't really. They fit all of what's left after they crush these items and that's not very difficult.

Yes- a garbage truck can-

If the garbagemen havent picked it up yet, you might not have remembered to tip them last year!!

seriously- if you can be there when pick up takes place, ask them and then slip them a tip- you'll have no problems next time!!

Here in North Carolina, they send a special truck, I don't know whether you would call it a crane or a fork lift, but it has these arms that come down and swoop it up, and lift it into the back of the truck, this is for big pieces of furniture as you mentioned.

In my state they pick up with big metal grabbers, I don't know the proper term for it, and then into a large brush and Bulk truck. Put them out a few days earlier so someone who may want them can pick them up.

If they said so then why worry about it? Let them worry, it's their job.
