I sometimes feel a little embarrassed that I work there because I am 31 years old and have a college degree. I feel like this position is something anyone can do. My degree is in Fashion Design. Do you think people look down on me and wonder why in the heck I am working at a retail store making only $13.50/hr with commission when I have a degree? Should I feel like I am lowering myself? I don't know why I feel that way. Do other people look down on people who work at the mall for a living? I guess I feel a little self concious and don't think all that highly of myself for working as a cosmetic salesperson for a living.

Heck no!!! I would rather have a 31 yr old do my make up anyway, I've had the young girls do my makeup and I scare myself in the mirror when they are done. Tons of people have degrees and do similar types of jobs. You now work for a great company, and with a four year degree and a little persistence, you should be able to work your way up in the company. Don't look at it as you are the make up girl, this is a great opportunity to become a merchandiser, a buyer, or personal shopper. This is a great opportunity if you choose it to be.

I don't think it matters much what other people are thinking if the job makes you happy, but it sounds like it doesn't. Is there another type of work that you have dreamed of pursuing? If there is, maybe you could start into it gradually while you still have a steady income from your current job. I have found myself in a similar position, I have a degree in Art History but all I could get were sales jobs. I've decided to get a post-degree certificate in paralegal studies for the income and security, and I'm also starting to pursue my creative interests on the side--writing, singing, etc. Good luck with whatever you end up doing :)

Anyone with a degree should not be working at Nordstroms making 13.50/hr. You already know you are selling yourself short, why ask the question? How much college debt do you have, that will help you determine real quick if you are getting paid what you deserve in today's job market. If you are content with making 13.50 with a college degree then Nordtstroms will be glad to take advantage of you, like they are right now.

Well, what's worse: working at the mall or not working at all?

Do the mall job while you look for something better, there is no shame in that. What is shameful is those pompous *** shiftless lazy bums who think certain work is 'beneath' them.

(Wow, sorry about the rant, my sister's last boyfriend was an 'artist' that couldn't bow down for the man. But he didn't mind living off my sister who worked for the man. But I digress...)

What do you really want to do with your career? Do you want to be at the counter? If that's what you really want, you shouldn't be self-conscious about it. But if you're frustrated that you have a college degree and you're working at a counter, then you need to decide how to develop your career in a new way.
