American DEfense: The fact that they could shorten distance with military vessels traveling from one Ocean to the Other.
Foreign Policy and Commerce it is as simple as the Location. Panama has a strategic location it is in the middle of the world. THat makes the comerce easier because Panama now serves as an exchange port. Distance and location.

It allowed us to move from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean easier and faster, so in turn that would help against American defense cause we could get supplies to the other side of world faster. As far as foreign policy, it helped us establish good relations with countries from Central America and whatnot.

the thing with the panama canal is basically for trading this is a shorter rout for forein ships travelling to california/ the west coast and frome th west coast to european countries
