my rat is 1 1/2 yrs old, i know this is getting into old age, but she was healthy one day and the next day she was crawling on her side, when i pick her up she twists her body , ( like she cant tell which way is up), i have her on antibiotics and have taken her to a vet. she has been on medicine for 3 days now. i need to know if i let her hang on , or if there is no chance of recovering, do i put her down,
i am willing to take care of her as long as she fights to live, but i dont want her to suffer. please let me know if it is an inner ear infection , and if so how long does it take to recover. please know funny comments. i love her dearly and waited for 8 yrs to get her.

I am so sorry, I know how painful this must be for you. Unless someone has had a rat for a pet, they really can't appreciate how intelligent they are, or how sweet they can be. Your vet thinks it is an inner ear infection? If that is the case, she should recover with the antibiotics. if this is something nuerological, however, you will have to decide what is really best for her. Sometimes the most loving thing you can do for your pet is the hardest decision for you to make.
If you can bear to give her a few days to see if the mediaction is working, please try to do so, I know it can't be easy for you to see her like this.

If you are now not inclined to take a unwell rat to the vet, do not get a rat. All pets need to be looked after. Unfortunately, plenty of puppy shops promote unwell rats. If you are going to Petco, then become a member of the membership. I've gotten unwell rats from there earlier than, and feature obvious a few deathly sick ones there. You must attempt to undertake one from a regional safe haven or rat rescue institution if that is feasible. The rats you may have been getting in most cases have respiration infections, that's natural in rats. They'll want a few remedy, which regularly clears the illness correct up (until they have had it for decades and it is gotten relatively dangerous). Be all set to pay over $one hundred for the vet talk over with and the remedy. Since you do not desire to pay even $30, I might propose returning the rats to the puppy retailer, informing them that they're unwell (despite the fact that they in most cases may not do some thing approximately it), and purchasing a puppy that is less complicated to take care of. Maybe fish or hermit crabs- anything that you do not must take to a vet. (Rats are very loving animals, and wish their house owners' love and concentration. They certainly must be taken to a vet while they are unwell.)

This sounds like an upper respiratory infection or Colic. Colic is something often seen in babbies and horses. It is when all different parts of there guts twist inside out. My horse had a bad case of it once, and he couldn't tell if he was getting up or pushing his head into the ground. It was sad but he did recover. I would let her fight. If you see her getting worse, dont put her down right away. With many infections, things will get worse, and hit there climax before they get better. If she gets drastically worse for more than a couple days, i would say to put her down. Just call your vet if there is any change in her health or health statis, if her eyes start to get crusty or her breathing gets lounder or quiter, if she can't get up, things like that, keep your vet informed about everything, you may get lucky and she might just pull through this!
Good luck

What did your vet say about it? Sounds like this is somethign to take up with a vet, not Yahoo!Answers since he/she has already seen the rat. If you are confident that the rat has lived it's life to the fullest then I would let it go, if the vet thinks that there's not much chance for recovery. If it's crawling on it's side that can't be very fun.

Rats are great companions, but when they get sick, the illness hits hard.

Sounds like a potential aggressive upper respiratory infection (which can cause head tilt, and off balance-ness.)

Even with medication, it's hard to beat. It can basically be treated, but not cured.

As long as she still shows you her spunk, and love for life, let her live. She'll let you know, when she has given up the fight.

Im sorry to hear about your rat, I would do what the vet says. Sometimes it takes medicine a few days to work so I would wait and see.

my best advice is to go to the vet every week for the next few weeks. the same thing happened to my friends hamster about 2 months ago after he had a mishap with the dog and was caught later inside the bathroom wall. unfortunatley, he died last month, of natural causes. let her keep fighting. dont pick her up, it is best to leave her alone until she gets better. best of wishes for you and your rat.

i'm sorry your sweet little girl is sick. i'd suggest going to another vet and getting a second opinion. if you think that she is suffering then i would suggest putting her to sleep. i know it will be a hard decision but follow your heart in what you think would be best for the two of you.
