What do make some stories stand out than others?

The person telling it for one. Would you listen to a story from Robin Williams or Ben Stien? Someone that can add excitment and interest really would add or take away from it. And then what happened such as you were in a wreck or you were bungie jumping, a story about watching your tree grow would not be that great.
