My question for anyone familiar with the welfare system in Chicago is that why is it that african-americans are given so much aid and when there are people who do need it they give them such a hard time to get it. I am hispanic and yes Im legal. But years ago a went through some tough times and as much as I didnt want to do it, I applied for welfare but was denied because I was "Making too much money" ( I dont call minimum wage too much money) But yet at the office I saw all these people pull up in nice cars with nice cell phones and all this bling and walking out with a case. Then during recent years I hear from african-american coworkers how they are getting welfare+they are working+their babies daddy is getting a check for babysitting his own kids +they get section 8 to pay for their rent so they are always careful to not work too many hours......While here I am busting my butt trying to make ends meet. Am I missing something here?

I know what your saying, but the reality is...just because they pull up in nice cars, don't mean they own them. Yes, they have their rent paid, but I know they don't have as much of a choice as where to live compared to the working person. Then too, what are they doing with the money they get, cause if they owned the cars...most likely their out there hustling in one form or another. Guy I couldn't agree with you more about the situation with people on welfare...I've worked most of my life and I still don't have a pot to pee in, and I work for the state at that yet, and I'm living from check to check...I hate it. However...I have known of people on welfare and what may look good to us really might not be good, cause most of the people that I knew that was on welfare and then got a job to get off of welfare....ABSOLUTELY HATED WELFARE!!! and they hope to never get back on it.
At my work, I could be drug tested at any time for alcohol/drugs!!!, and if it shows positive, then I can lose my job, which means I lose a pay check!!! I feel since my tax money out of my check goes to pay people on welfare, then I feel they should be drug/alcohol tested as well, and if it comes back positive, then they should lose their benefits, just like the working person. If they would do that, I'm almost sure that there wouldn't be as many people on welfare and thats in the long run will save the state money.
