It depends ... If the company offers bereavement leave for which he is eligible, and he just isn't getting paid for it, he should contact the human resources department and find out why. He may need to provide copy of the death certificate or other documentation before they process the payment.
if the company does not offer bereavement leave, or does not offer it for the relationship involved (i.e. some companies only offer paid bereavement leave for the death of a parent, brother/sister, or child, but not a friend or a more distant relative) your friend might request that the leave be put as vacation time rather than unpaid days off so he can collect for the two days - but he'll lose two days vacation.

No clear Answer without knowing some more facts.
Such as What state or province did this happen in?
Also does your friend know it the company has a berearvment policy?
If not... Then it's up to the direct supervisor to be compasionate.
If not.. Then your Friend has no grounds for any claim at all.
Not getting paid is common with small companies.
Can you imagine.. 10 employee co. and 5 people have 5 funerals, in a year. Thats 50 or more days of pay.. Some small business just would not have the wherewithall to fund that kind of thing. 50 days of pay.. At say 1000.00 day full cost including benifits. Wow That is 50,000.00 they would have to have in reserve JUST for the Beareavment Funding.
Most likely even if a small business owner wanted to or was good hearted to.. he/she would be unable due to the magnitude of the costs.

that's a question that really doesn't have a definite answer. What do you think he should do? What does he want to do? What does his boss think he should do? It really doesn't make sense. I guess work more hours and take on some overtime to make up for the loss time.

Depends on the company policy on this. No exceptions. If there is no policy (very small company) and your friend does not like it, he should look for another job. Such is life.
