The attitude of society at large and the lack of clear legal definition.
Marriage is a legal contract as much as anything else and if the terms of the contract are unclear it can generate a multitude of problems. Heterosexual marriage contracts are fairly clearly understood so do not have the same problems.

Actually out of the same sex couples I know there are a lot fewer "problems" than with the hetero couples I know. Most of the hetero couples I know have been divorced at least once. All of the gay couples I know are still with the same partners they started out with over 30 years ago...one couple has actually been together more than 40 years. The problems actually stem from OUTSIDE the relationships. With those small minds of many heteros who tend to bring up the religious angle as if everyone on the planet believed as they do.

According to hollyweird, and the mainstream press, they are actually BETTER than heterosexual marriages. Of course there's no evidence, but that never stopped it from being repeated over and over again, much like the "women don't need men" or "kids don't need fathers". Turned out to be a BIG LIE, but that's what makes America great.
