In the blue area at the bottom of the screen (where the start button is), over on the right occasionally I get this little gold-colored shield-shaped icon with an exclamation point or keyhole(?) in the middle of it. When I pass the cursor over it, I get a bubble that says "Updates are ready for your computer--click here to install these updates". Who is this from? I'm afraid it is someone trying to highjack my computer.

Those are microsoft windows updates. it is a good idea to instll these updates. often they are security fixes to prevent someone from hijacking your computer.

If you are that worried about hijackers, install a firewall to prevent unwanted access.
