I think it is a great way to exchange ideas. You may have met them casually like thru a group, but find you have in common or in great opposition ideas about something, anything. You exchange summary's of, or points about these things. During the exchange, you find you really like to exchange thoughts with this person. I have several e-mail friends that I am grateful for.

I think it is totally possible as I am doing it. I've been chatting with this person online for about 5 months...we just recently started talking on the phone...but most of our communication has been by emails. It isn't so much what others think of it...it is what you think of it. If you feel good about it then it makes it okay. If it doesn't then tell the person how you feel as they can't read your mind.

There's nothing wrong with it. If I were to converse with someone via email for a long time, I'd probably eventually like to meet them, or at least talk to them on the phone.

I have a very good friend that lives several states from me. We have never met and eventually we ended up having phone conversations from time to time. She is a very nice lady and some times you can become friends with someone that far away and have a true friendship.

Hey, its no biggie. I know someone at school but I only really talk to him through messages on myspace lol. We talk about movies and stuff, and its all good. Just if you're going to do that, don't give out any private/personal information. Penpals are always fun!
