I know I shouldnt be thinking about a show for toddlers but one day I was just sitting at home and I thought of this question.

Blue is a girl dog.........my kids watch the show and I always thought "blue" dog = boy dog......until I heard Steve say "she"
And to confuse you even more.......Magenta the pink dog..........is a boy!
I believe they were trying to get away from using color/gender stereotyping.

A girl,I thought blue was a boy for the longest. I guess just because she's blue and has a friend named magenta. The association of blue being a stereotypical color for males played a part in that thought too.

Q: Why a puppy?
Angela: Initially we had a kitten, but we heard that another programme was in the works that had a kitten, so we switched to a puppy. We made her a girl because we wanted the animated character to be the opposite sex of the live character. Since we always had Kevin working off of a blue screen, we decided to call her Blue. We consciously went against the colour stereotype.

Blues a woman! similar with Magenta.. xD i concept she became a boy for the LONGEST time yet quicker or later Joe became like Blue needs to go over to HER chum's residing house & I had an epiphany :P
