People feel comfortable having a routine, so they follow it.
Also, as connections in your brain get used, your brains expands them and makes it easier for your mind to follow them.
That means that if you do something ONCE, then there is a larger chance than there was before for you to do it. Remember, the last time, the chance of you doing that thing was so high that you did it. So if that chance increases, then there is a larger chance of you increasing your chance of doing it. It's a horrible cycle. That's why I have never drunk, or smoked!

Many are, you're right. But addiction is an overused term as well.
Addiction is a compulsive behavior (alcohol, drugs, sex, gambling, religion, controlling others, etc.)... trying to fill an emptiness or cover up something that is painful by focusing on the object of compulsion... and sometimes transferring to another or having more than one. But it's all about the same thing.
The key is to disrupt the cycle and experience the pain or emptiness for what it is really all about. Then dealing with it somehow (individual or group therapy).

So you have noticed , good for you.
I think it is becaused their mind gets focused and the brain gets positive reinforcement either in accolades or endorphins .
Booze & drugs make the brain Happy
Hard Exercise like running long distance produces endorphins (brain Drugs)
Being the dynamic leader in any pursuit, gets accolades and endorphin like feelings in acceptance.
Being really good at what you do gets you accolades from peers, or maybe ony extreme satisfaction from yourself.
How about deeply religious people? Talk about addiction.!!
But however you look at it, I haven't seen many people without some kind of addiction.

It's a crutch for something that we are lacking in our lives. There is so much divorse because we can always find in someone else what we are lacking in our current relationship. If we could have a little of about 2-3 men than we might get what we need, but that is called bigamy and that is unacceptable!!! Peace Out!!

Because we love to do things that feel good and some of those things are physically or psychologically addicting. Physical addiction alters our brain chemisty but psychological addiction stimulates our pleasure centre and we keep doing it because we get hooked on that ecstatic feeling

It gives them something to do. ANYTHING could be an addiction. Video games, exercise, eating, not only drugs are addictive.
