Chickens may try to swim but their bodies are not made for it.
If you compare a chicken's anatomy with a water fowl like a duck you will see lots of key differences. One is their feathers. A duck's feathers are made to be waterproof, while a chicken's can suck up water. Another difference are their feet. A duck has webbed feet to help with propelling them in the water, while a chicken's is more to help grip onto where ever they are roosting.

yes but not very well
had a chicken that grew up with some ducks
when the ducks took to water the chicken followed .but looked very silly sitting deep in the water and going very slowly

all animals swim enough to get out of trouble
otherwise there would be dead animals everywhere ,everytime it rained a lot.

My brother is a chicken. Has been all his life.
He hates Roller Coasters, dancing, speaking in public, asking girls out, heights, spiders, dogs, and anything else that takes gumption.
Yet, he swims, swims like a fish, loves the water, swims everyday.....so yes chickens do swim!!!
