Check the Gerber website. They have a great chart on feeding your baby based on their developmental stages not their age. I followed it with my son and now using it with my daughter. I would give him soft foods that require some chewing. You could try other cereals & real oatmeal or cream of wheat (or grits if you live in the south) mashed potatos, sliced cheese maybe some over cooked pasta. Try some stage 2 foods. They have a few chunks in them for him to get used to chewing.

We kept to non chewing foods, rice cereal with bananas, oatmeal, lots of milk and the gerber first stage foods. Yellow veggies, squash and sweet potatoes were a favorite. We didn't have any luck with chewing food until teeth came around 9 mos.
Definitely ask the dr though if there is a history of allergies in the baby's family. You may want to keep out some foods that would be fine if there is no allergy history.

at 7 months I was feeding my baby more stage 2 foods, which are the samr smooth consistancy, but just more per package. They are more for your money. I also continued to mix some sort of baby cereal with his meal at least once a day, and we continue to nurse.

You should be trying to introduce a new food every 3-5 days until he has had a wide variety. You can also mix foods that you know s/he is not allergic to, for instance sweet potato with apple sauce. Around nine months you may want to try intorducing foods that are more chunky in consistancy.

I found what the pre made baby food offers is not enough variety, so I also buy a fair amount of produce and either, steam, roast, or boil and then puree it in my food processor. By son loves zucchini, squash, potatoes and chicken this way.

Food for Middle Stage (7 - 8 months old)

* Moderate the thickness of the texture of rice gruel depending on how well your baby swallows. When your baby starts eating fruit, it would be better to stop to give her fruit juice.

* Use only boiled egg yolk at the beginning of this stage. If your baby shows no sign of allergenic reactions, start introducing whole eggs after 8 months old. Egg should be cooked well.

* If your baby shows any signs of possible allergenic reactions, consult with a doctor.

Seven to eight months: Adding protein. From seven to eight months you will want to think about adding protein foods to your baby’s diet. Protein foods include strained meats, cottage cheese, egg yolk, yoghurt, and dried beans. As with the fruits and vegetables, you will want to introduce one new food at a time and wait 2 to 4 days before introducing a new food, starting with a small helping (one teaspoonful) and gradually increasing.
I get this useful tips in the book I bought at this link: http://bestforyourbaby.prasasti.com/books
There is many categories of food to give to 1-12 months old in the book, you could read it too because you're first time mom. It contains guide for baby care and baby safety and all you need to know about newborn care.

Congratulations to be a mom :)

Keep doing what you're doing. Maybe try Gerber stage three, the Chicken & Apples, etc. They have different combos. Cheerios, Rice Crispies, Goldfish crackers are good too. There are things you should NOT give him/her...honey, peanut butter, shellfish. Wait until your baby's 9 mo. check up & ask your doctor.

Until they can process solid food, usually around a year you do soft foods like you are, start adding in soft pulpy fruits like cantolope, and melons but only little little pieces. After fruits are easy start with Cheeros and unsugared cereal pieces, they love them. Work up to Gerber small bites and so forth.

you can probably start slowly introducing fruits now, but you should still talk to your doctor first and see what they say
