Im not a liberal, but why do the ulta-conservatives keep calling liberals hippies? The majority of New Yorkers are liberal democrats, yet I dont think of them as 'hippies'. Where is this stereotype coming from? I thought the hippie movement pretty much died off 30 years ago.?

My husband is an NY'er and he's conservative, if that helps.
Outside views from people who don't know or have never been to NY probably come from TV.

The Repugnicans used to call liberal Democrats Commies, during the McCarthy Era.

The Republican Party only tries to appeal to a certain segment of society; thus, they are always trying to label anyone else who does not fit into their group; and condemning them for not fitting in.

As stated above, a better label for many New Yorkers is Yuppie; Young Urban Professionals. Hippie was a term during the Sixties, coined to described people who were young, had long hair and were against the Viet Nam War.

No, they aren't. It comes from the late 60s/early 70s when liberals tended to be hippies.

I can really see that you are an educated individual to make such a profound statement based on conjuncture. I was a " Hip " person in the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and Low and Behold, I'm almost 66 and still 'Hip", but it's with Jesus, and it's alot better all the way..........God Bless America !!

Conservatives think that anybody who doesn't follow their tenets to the letter is a hippie. It's rhetoric; don't take it seriously.
