It's like comparing apples to oranges to be honest because the NHL is so different now compared to when Gretzky was in the league.
Both are amazing players. However, in the 'New' NHL, God only knows how many goals and assists Wayne Gretzky could get without the clutching/grabbing and interfernce that existed in the league up until the last two years.
Then again, you can also say that Gretzky did a lot of what he did on an All Star filled Oilers team and Sidney has done a lot of the scoring in Pittsburgh with less skilled linemates. I don't know if I'd buy into that idea though because Wayne was simply amazing even in LA & NY when the players around him were not that great.

definatly Gretzky he came in the league where there were no superstars and emerged as one he had over 300 points in his first 2 seasons Crosby just went over 200 a month ago unless he can pull about 80 points out of his *** in the next month Gretzky will have more. Although Crosby is a little tougher and also better competition, if gretzky were 19 now he would tear up the NHL once again

I think some of you people are missing the point of the question. Of course Gretzky has Cups, MVP's, and a boatload of records that Crosby doesn't have yet.
If you look at it in terms of who was better at the age of 19, I would say it's Crosby. He's the youngest to score 100 points in NHL history, and his point totals at this point in his career is very close to Gretzky. The main difference between the two players is that Gretzky was putting up points with established players, and without playing against European and Russian players, while Crosby put up 100+ points last year with Colby Armstrong and Ryan Malone on his line.
This year, he's going to win the Ross trophy while missing 5 games earlier in the season.
Will Crosby be better than Gretzky....Time will tell. At this point in his career, I think Crosby may be slightly ahead of the Great One.

Crosby, Gretzky is a terrible coach. Now if you mean as a player and NOT their current positions then I would say Gretzky was better because he has a CAREER to back him up. Crosby has been great these last 2 years, but still think a Career means more.
Just want to bring one thing up. This whole thing about how Crosby has done this or that and the Youngest in the NHL to do it doesn't mean as much as you think. You need to remember that Gretzky played for a year in the WHA before he went to the NHL. So he had a year of pro-hockey before joining the NHL, but those points didn't count toward the NHL totals.

If you were to compare shear athletic ability then crosby by a nose, Gretzky was not the fastest guy and didn't have the booming shot, he was basically average to small. Crosby is faster and more gifted.
But in the mental department, it is gretzky by a mile... there is a reason that the area behind the net is called "Gretzky's office"
only time will really tell the answer to this, you also have to take into consideration that the great one had one hell of a team behind him when he was in edmonton.

Until someone comes along to better his marks everyone else will be compared to Gretzky. Crosby has a long way to go before he can even come close to the numbers that Wayne put up.

Crosby. Gretzky is over 45 and hasn't played in over 5 years.
If you want to know who was better all-time, well it is senseless to compare someone who had 200 points FOUR TIMES with someone who hasn't even had 150 (although that doesn't stop people on Y!A from doing it.......)
And even if you want to know who was better at Crosby's age I STILL would pick Gretzky. LOOK at the statistics. And NO, Gretzky did NOT have "all that help" when he was Crosby's age, that came later.
