In art class, we paint our paintings based on an original of another artist. I'm pretty sure this is legal, but I just wanted to make sure. PLEASE don't guess the answer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Only answer if you have a reliable source. I really don't want to be misled! Thank you in advance for your cooperation!

It's called making a "derivative work" of the original.

Whether it's legal or not depends on whether the original is still protected by copyright, and whether the original artist gave permission for the work to be used in this manner.

If the original artist died more than 50-70 years ago, then the original picture is now in the public domain, and free to use.

If the original artist released the picture into the public domain, or put a Creative Commons license on it, or otherwise gave permission for its use, then you are fine.

But if the work is still protected by copyright and being used without permision, then that is an illegal copyright violation.
