It is very important to a lot of people, in light of the division over this war and the majority of Americans being unhappy with their President's performance in office.
But, it really isn't all that out of line. California just changed its primary date from June '08 to Feb. 5, '08 - joining Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Idaho (Democrats only), Missouri and Utah, all having their primaries on that same date. Fifteen other states are considering moving their's up to that date as well. That's only about 10 months away. We are anxious in this country about this election though aren't we? I'm already looking forward to the debates, but then I'm a bit of a political junkie.

So that we might forget about who's in office right now?
Seriously, it is a weeding out process that must take place. A posturing must begin and we will see who has the best footing, then... The Election!
Until then, it is very important to keep Bush accounatble (Yeah, right, like that isn't near to impossible) and it is very important to not get distracted with current issues, particularly of a foreign nature.

Agreed. However the election is its just over a year and a half. But the primaries in some states are less than a year.
Still its too early to tell anything.

Because republicans really are scared about how bad they are going to do in these elections.
Republicans cant bear to not have the power to fund billions to their friends,or create backroom deals that will ensure they continue to live in power.
Republicans know its about power that will help them get richer.
So of course they are always looking ahead.
Democrats are forced to respond to this.

We SHOULD be talking about it. I'm glad we are. Selecting the next President of the United States is not something that can or should happen at the last minute.
We can't afford it. Never could.

It *is* that important to us -- all of us.
Now, in these earlier days, we begin to see how the candidates compare on domestic and foreign policy. Even those who appear to be furthest away from the center of attention may do/say/write something that has bearing on not just their potential as a candidate, but on other candidates' agendas.

You again. My answer was downthumbed by someone on your other question.
Why?
The election is almost two years away still. We don't even know who the candidates will be! Some of these people running now will drop out, and others will join the party.

Because this country has made a terrible mistake twice running and it set us back 50 years in diplomacy and cost us 3,200 young lives.
Everyone is anxious to make sure we pick someone qualified mentally to be our next president.

i was also thinking it was a bit early. i think it may have been sped up because obama was pressured to formally announce... and hillary wasn't having any of that. it's going to get nasty, real nasty.
