It's probly one of your neighbors that have a wireless router set up in their home.

Luckily they don't have a password set up and you can just hop on their signal.

the distance depends on how strong your signal is but it's likey somewhere on your block.

If they know where to look they can actually tell that your using it although they won't know who you are and it really isn't hurting them (unless your doing things like downloading lots of stuff then they will experiance slowdown)

If it was me, i would avoid doing things to slow down their wireless connection which might influence them to make a password and cut you off.

until that happens, enjoy the free internet!

oh wow, first thing first go to http://www.wi-fihotspotlist.com/ and enter in your address or just the city if you want, itll give you the possible hotspots of where your internet can come from, the place can be pretty far depending on how exactly they have their free hotspot cranked up to, mostly 100% so it could be about 400 feet maybe more or less depending on what is between you and the location of it. If you look at the properties when you are connected sometimes it will give you the name of the business or its just a network that someone has cranked up and didnt realize it was open to other ppl like you.

If u are near a gas station or Mcdonalds, its prob. a hot spot. right click on ur connection down on the bottom of ur screen and then clik View available connections and depending on what its called is where the hot spot is. like if it says Mcdonalds its at mcdonalds. this hot spot is most likely 50 ft. away without an antenna and about 100-200 ft away with an antenna. hope i could help!

1 No more than probably 300 feet
2. You really can't without some kind of directional signal locator.
3. It should be broadcasting its SSID if you can sign on it. If not, you probably can't sign on. Go into the wifi card software on your computer and see if it can scan for a access point. That will tell you the name of the signal.

some routers can expand up to 200ft away so its got some distance. and you dont. its jut comming at you. unless you buy a small device that you can walk around with but what exactly do you care where its coming from your just using it. you know its internet. what more do you need?
