I want to gauge my ears a couple sizings. I've seen tapers for sale to help get the next size in. I was wondering if I could just buy a taper for a couple gauges bigger than i have and just slide it in more over the course of a month or two.

Would this work? Or will my attempts to be cheap be thwarted?

I agree that going to a professional is always the best route. It can get expensive if the shop requires you to buy their jewelery. If you want to do it yourself, just make sure that you only go up one size at a time, use lubricant (ie. lotion), and wait at least a month between stretchings. If you rush it, you can just tear your lobes.

It all depends on how big you want to go, if its in the smaller gauges you may be able to get a piercer to do it in one sitting. As you get into the bigger gauges the jumps between them are bigger. It may be difficult to keep a taper in for a month but i guess you could try. or you could get spiral at a bigger size and slide it towards the biggest part.

The best thing to do would to be to go to a reliable piercing parlor in your city and talk with a professional. They can tell you what will work and what won't work. It's better to go to a professional with the proper training and equipment than to do it on your own. Also the piercer will tell you how long to wait before moving up to the next size, so you don't damage the tissue. You may end up spending a few more bucks for a professional job, but it'll be worth it in the end.

I can't imagine that would work the best. You probably need to the sizer to be in your ear the whole time so you aren't causing damage to your skin by trying to size it too quickly.
