I've heard nothing but excellent things about Donald Maass and he has an excellent reputation and rating at preditors and editors.

There are tons more but he's the first one that comes to mind.

There are so many agents out there - you have to find agents who are reading the type of material you write. Just remember to query properly - sending ONLY exactly what they state in their submission requirements. You can check the agent out by going to Preditors and Editors and looking them up and by joining Absolute Write Water Cooler and surfing through their Bewares and Background Checks section for other writers who have had bad experiences with a particular agent. There are MANY listed there.

The relationship between an agent and author is a very personal one - it either works or it doesnt work. You have to find someone who is enthusiastic about your work and you. Pax - C.

Not knowing what kind of writer you are, we can't answer that question. You see, like publishers, different agents represent different genres. You can have an amazing book and a beautiful query letter, but if you write chick lit and send off your letter to an agent who represents fantasy, you are going to get a rejection.

Pick up a copy of "Writer's Market" or "Guide to Literary Agents", hunt through Agent Query, and put your Google skills to use to dig up as much information as you can on agents who represent the kinds of things that you write. There is tons of information out there!
