If you have a 28 day cycle, most doctors advise checking home ovulation kits at day 10. If your cycle is longer or shorter, you will need to adjust the day accordingly.

Depends on how long your cycles are...if you know how long, start checking 20 days before your expected period (assuming you're regular). Assuming your luteal period is 14 days, you should check the entire week before you expect o-day, just to be sure. Oh, and if you aren't already, check your bbt as well to make doubly-sure.
