The spouse moved in and out filed for divorce several times, and this went on for a couple of years. How can the marriage survive, or trust be rebuilt. I think a marriage can be bad and you know it , but when a third party is thrown into the mix, you want to win and will try to keep spouse at all costs, the threat or realty of rejection.

There are as many reasons for that as there are for cheating in the first place.

Children
Etc

People make mistakes... however I personally would not tolerate it more then once... in my book you have one screw up like that ... a mistake... do it again you need to be prepared for divorce!
Like I said people make mistakes but more then once is no longer a mistake. It shows a lack of respect and love for your spouse. Bad enough the first time!

I suppose you are right that some feel the "competition", Some don't want to feel the reality of rejection, and some are just to blinded by the love they don't realize that the person they are with is no good. Some don't want the humiliation of a divorce.. in other words there are a lot of reasons... bad or otherwise.. people stay and it depends on the couple as to the reason.

Trust probably can't be rebuilt in the situation you describe, there is just no commitment there at all. But people don't just easily let go of lovers they have had so easily...there was a reason for the connection, and the memory of everything that happened is always there. Probably better if all parties went separate ways and started brand new.

In my case, we had young children when I found out about my husband's 7 month affair with a married woman. My husband admitted that he had his head up his butt and vowed that it wouldn't happen again. I didn't want the fact that my husband behaved like a jerk to ruin our family. I didn't even try to win my husband from the OW. As a matter of fact, I very strongly encouraged him to leave and be with her if that was what he wanted. He never left. So no, people don't try to hang onto a cheating spouse no matter what. If I'm a winner, my prize is a husband that I know cheated on me and thought very little of me and our marriage. Woo, hoo!

The two spouses married to each other clearly still love each other since no divorce has occurred. It's called marriage.

Sometimes they stay together because of a virtue (quality) we all call forgiveness displayed by the person that was cheated on.

"men or women"

Sorry, but your wrong ... it should be "Why do women tolerate"

Women don't cheat on men. It never happens. MEN CHEAT ... NOT women. Men are sick twisted pigs, and they are a bunch of dumb idiots. They only care about themselves. Women don't cheat, so don't say they do. Your an embarrassment to females.
