my husband was this way too (until i fixed him;). it may be issues you have with insecurity about your ability, so you stop yourself before you can fail. maybe you just have to think, if i don't make it, what's the worst that could happen? you won't be living in utter poverty, eating sewage, seeing your children die, etc. and what are the possibilities if you make it?

as for school. if you;re talking about going to a community college, the test they want you to take is most likely a placement test so they know which math and english level to start you at, so it's not pass or fail. then, you should talk to an advisor to plan our what general ed. classes you need to get either your two-year degree (a.a.) or to transfer to a 4 year college or university to finish up your last two years for a bachelor's degree.

if you are talking about some kind of career-oriented school like devry or some tech/computer school or a medical assisting school, that's a waste of time and money as they usually only end up landing you low-payign jobs with limited mobility.

finally, see about financial aid. go to the government website for the fafsa - the form you need to fill out for financial aid.

good luck!

Study anything you are interested in and learn. It's what we're supposed to do as human beings.

Don't be afraid of failing a test. You can always try again and learn from the experience. I had a good friend when I first moved here (my first American friend!) who failed the same math exam - three times. Now he's one of the most brilliant programmers I know and is paid very, very well. I guess it just took a while for it to 'click' for him.

The test is probably very simple just to make sure you're not totally hopeless. Schools are in it for the $$$, remember. Do your best; and, if you fail, it's likely that you wouldn't have done well in class anyway...
And remember, it is not a test of your character!!!
