J.R.R. Tolkien's use of language, first of all, was just SO amazing. I have some serious problems with reading his book (I loved it, but it was slow reading for me), and I do a heck of a lot of hard reading.
J.R.R. Tolkien, in a quick way of saying it, created one of the greatest trilogies...ever?!?!
It is going to be VERY hard to top him.
If you want to be a write, go ahead, but do not try and aim to be as great as J.R.R. Tolkien is. Aim, maybe, to be a published writer and once you are published maybe aim to be a best-selling published writer, but topping J.R.R. is an almost impossible goal.
Good luck, though

Tolkien did a massive amount of work for each piece of writing, and his career choices helped. if you have an imagination as rich as his, have read as much as he had, and can take the time to develop your writing style, you have a chance of becoming a great author, but becoming as great as him will take time and effort. half the fantasy stories and concepts of the last half century borrow from his ideas.

I know that Clancy guy that writes about espoinage and war goes and visits air bases and does all kinds of research and inverviews with military people before he writes. Tolkien probably put just as much research into what he wrote about also. Sounds like just plain ol' hard research into what you are going to write about is the way to go, if thats what the big guys go about it.

Sorry, sweetie, but writers like Tolkien are few and far between.
You do realize that he invented quite a number of his own languages -Elvish is actually a LANGUAGE because of him- He made maps of places he wrote about... family trees, histories of histories of families. Every detail of his stories were planned to perfection! He wrote the book that his character wrote in one of his books. This man went beyond any writer has ever gone and I highly doubt that anyone will ever come close to him.... JK Rowling is good, writing books that are mentioned in her books, but she has yet to make a language (I think she should make Parseltongue, how cool would that be?!) Rowling will never be quite up to par with Tolkien
Sorry, hon, but I think its truly impossible...
Man's reach exceeds his grasp, and his imagination exceeds his reach.

Tolkien's biggest assets were his imagination and his use of imagery. Sadly, imagination at his level is something you must be born with...there's just no way to force yourself to have it. You can however train yourself in the use of imagery. Write your stories and have someone HONEST critique them. Could they see the main character in their mind? Could they describe how he looks? Could they describe the settings? If not, work on filling in the gaps....the best stories in the world should run like HD DVD's in your brain...you should be able to see the stories as much as read them.

J.R.R. Tolkien was a superb author because of his knowledge and incredible talent for fantasy. But he wrote what he knew combined with a myth that in was in him that he felt he should share. Writing isn't something that is completely about what you know, but what you can imagine, and how strongly your desire is to create something like he did just to share it with the rest of the world. Follow his path and your desire and imagination and you can achieve what he did.

Already, I get the sense that you're frustrated at your attempts to emulate JRR himself. That will just lead to eventual failure.
My advice is don't even go there. Just develop your own style and voice.
Work on what's important to you as the writer.
I have many favorite authors myself, but I don't even try to emulate them. It's too much of a hassle.

An author with Tolkein's depth is very rare. You would need to do a tremendous amount of research, character studies and outlines before you even began to write. Pax - C.

Hi, there! First of all you must know the expectations of the general public. 2ND, write a simple easily understandable story with a huge emotional amount, something that people should talk about. 3rd, search common, ordinary subjects but try to adapt them to the common sense. Good luck, pal!
